Oduduwa

Odudua (Odùduwà) is the legendary orisha and ancestral civilizing hero who created dry land, the primordial patriarch of all Yoruba civilization and the first sacred sovereign (Ooni) of the holy city of Ile-Ife in Nigeria. Tasked with completing the foundation of the earthly world when his elder brother Obatala succumbed to thirst on the road and fell into a deep sleep under the intoxicating fumes of palm wine, Odudua resolutely took the sacred shell containing magic earth, the mystical five-toed hen and the chameleon from his brother's hands and descended from the spiritual heavens of Orun by a colossal chain of wrought iron to the dark waters of the primordial ocean. Scattering the virgin soil and releasing the hen, which scratched and spread the land and expanded the continents, he founded the cradle of the human world and established the sacred monarchy with the royal crown of beaded ade with fringes, sending his sixteen sons and grandsons to found the great sovereign kingdoms of Oyo, Ketu, Benin, Ijebu and Ilesa. He personifies legitimate divine kingship, firm leadership, civic courage and unshakable ancestral dignity. He is the eternal telluric foundation that sustains the honor of the royal dynasties and guarantees the steadiness of the steps of all his children on earth. His sacred ade crown and his wrought-iron sword proclaim the legitimate kingship and the undying glory of the entire Yoruba nation. His iron staff and his sacred earth remain as the unshakable symbol of the sovereignty, dignity and courage of the whole Yoruba civilization. His divine memory lights the earth with perpetual justice and ancestral honor.
