Viracocha

Viracocha (Apu Qun Tiksi Wiraqucha Pachayachachiq) is the supreme creator deity, the primordial demiurge of the universe, architect of the Andean mountain ranges and supreme civilizing master in Inca and pre-Columbian Andean cosmology. Emerging from the dark and mysterious waters of the sacred Lake Titicaca in the primordial darkness that preceded the time of men, he ordained the resplendent birth of the sun (Inti), the silvery moon (Mama Quilla) and the myriad astral constellations from the mythical Island of the Sun. Having destroyed the first imperfect generation of rebellious stone giants through a torrential cosmic flood (the Uno Pachakuti), he modeled the different human nations in stone in the monumental city of Tiwanaku, assigning to each ethnic group its typical clothing, languages, seeds and agricultural customs, before breathing the breath of life into them through caverns and sacred springs (pacarinas). Wandering the Andean valleys disguised as a venerable old pilgrim in a tunic of Andean linen, staff in hand, he taught the moral law, challenged idolatry and ingratitude, and worked miracles of purifying fire before walking on the foam of the waves of the Pacific Ocean toward the west, promising to return in the fullness of time. His luminous and compassionate presence guides the Andean peoples through the cycles of cosmic time with wisdom, ecological harmony and unshakable justice. His ancestral wisdom and his staff as cosmic master remain the unshakable moral foundation of the whole Andean civilization. He is the celestial architect of the Andes whose great work remains alive in the heart of the peoples of South America.
